When Urban Roots set out to reimagine the self-watering planter — replacing the ugly plastic norm with something you’d actually want in your home — they needed a manufacturing partner who could hold tight tolerances in ceramic, at volume, without losing craft quality. They came to us.

The challenge
The Urban Roots system depends on a self-wicking reservoir mechanism, which means every pot has to be manufactured to precise internal dimensions to fit specific internal components. There’s no tolerance for the variation you’d normally accept in decorative ceramics — if the sizing drifts, the mechanism doesn’t seat correctly. This was, frankly, our most challenging project to date.
What we delivered
We developed the tooling and validated the reservoir geometry with first-article samples before scaling. The result is a durable, high-fired stoneware body that is fully waterproof and food-safe, produced in five distinct colourways so the customer could personalise their setup. Every pot carries a consistent, repeatable finish while holding the internal tolerances the mechanism requires.
The collaboration proved that craft-level ceramic quality and precision-engineered, reproducible manufacturing aren’t mutually exclusive — a principle that now defines the work we take on.
